General Instructions

Font Size
The font in the text used should be 11.

Page Margins
Every page must use the following margins on an A4 page: -

Left-hand side 4.5 cms
Right-hand side 4.5 cms
From top 5.5 cms
Bottom 7 cms from the last line

Page Numbers
Page number should be inserted one space below the last line in the middle.

Sub-headings

Non-English Words
All non-English words should be in italics (e.g.inter alia, et al. )

Spellings
Please use British spellings (e.g., categorised and not categorized, similarly, realised, not
realized etc, etc.).

Abbreviations
Abbreviations consisting of capital initial letters should be expressed without full stop such as GNP, USA. Contractions ending with the same letter as the original word do not take terminal full stops - edn, Dr, Mr - but abbreviations where the last letter of the word is not included do take a full stop such as ed., ch. Thus ed. And eds are both correct. However, abbreviated units of measurement should be mentioned without a full point such as Ib, Kg, mm - and do not take a final 's' in the plural - thus, 8 oz. The abbreviations etc., i.e., and e.g., are usually best replaced by 'and so on', 'that is' and 'for example'.
Please write per cent in full in text but use % sign in tables and figures.
Please omit apostrophes in plurals, for example, 1950s, MPs.

Dates
Dates should be written as 25 September 2001 and decades should be 1980s without an apostrophe

Hyphens
Avoid using hyphens wherever possible, unless doing so makes the text confusing.

Quotations and Extracts
Must be exact reproductions in every aspect even if this differs to the rest of the book. Single quotes should be used for extracts of less than 50 words. Extracts exceeding 50 words should be indented from the left margin, with space above and below and quotation marks should be omitted. Double quotes should be used for quotes within quotes. Notes or editorial comment within the extracts should appear in square brackets, and omissions should be indicated by 3 dots followed by a full point if it occurs at the end of a sentence.

Consistency throughout the book is the most important aspect.

Copyright and Permissions
If an extract quoted in a book from copyright material exceeds 400 words, or a collection of extracts exceeds 800 words, permission to reproduce is needed. If in doubt permission should always be sought. This is all the responsibility of the author along with any fees that may arise. Permission is also required for tables and diagrams used from published sources. Acknowledgement of source, author, and publisher must be made.

Libel
Please ensure that you do not make any defamatory or injurious statement about living persons, institutions or other organisations that could result in libel claims
