"Of
Magic and Mutiny" is a brilliant and harrowing piece that grips
from the first dramatic page to the last stunning revelation. I
have rarely read a
more original and haunting fiction, yet a reality of the incredibly
incompetent handling of the independence of African States
A spellbinding
dramatic novel, rich in characterisation and atmosphere,
inspired by actual events, rich in people, places and customs vividly
realized, with mordant humour, terror and sadness, is a revelation
of the
horror that had been hidden in the African Continent. Any reader
of this novel will share the pains the children of Africa have suffered.
Professionally
written, the stench of rotting institutions, the paranoia of
its inmates and tyranny, murder and even genocide in hands of dictators,
are all well depicted, swift and smart. Much more than a novel,
"Of Magic and Mutiny" puts African history and human rights
into perspective. Democratisation and people`s Governance, emancipation
and giving chance to zeulia as the first woman to lead her people,
etc. are the first steps to building a "New Africa", in
order to reverse the appalling problems.
Mwijage is
a real master manipulator, a master at capturing the uspense
lurking behind the facade of ordinary life.
